Welcome to our farm!
Our story
My name is Christie and I am the owner and founder of Blue Salute Farms along with my husband Billy. Since I was younger I felt I was born into the wrong life and that growing up in the city was not where I belonged. I always wanted to live on a farm, grow my own food, and raise animals. I am stubborn, independent and hard working, never wanting to rely on someone else for something that I wanted or needed.
When I was twenty three I planted my first garden. I finally had my own house with a small back yard, and I couldn’t wait to get rid of the grass and plant some food. It wasn’t much- tomato’s, peppers, and cucumbers, but it was the beginning. Over the years the gardens became much bigger as we had the space to accommodate them. We had to start over so many times due to frequent moves. I just took it all as practice knowing that eventually I would have a place that I wouldn’t have to leave and by then I would know how to grow so many things.
We raise several different types of animals here on the farm. We have cattle -a Highland Bull(Hank) and a Dexter Cow(Lucy) which we breed for both beef and dairy. They are the perfect cow for smaller homesteads. We have a small herd of Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats that we use the milk from to make goat milk soap. Our chickens provide us with the most beautiful and delicious eggs, along with the ducks and turkeys. We also have Kune Kune pigs and Jacob sheep. Our farm wouldn’t be complete without our Great Pyrenees dogs, Pearl, Betsy, and Archie who are livestock guardians and protect our entire farm from predators and our gaggle of barn cats who keep all the rodents away from the barn helping to keep everyone healthy.
What’s in a name?
I served eleven years in the Air Force before getting out to raise our children. Billy spent the next several years finishing up his career and then retired after twenty one years serving in the Air Force. Our farm name is a nod to our combined years of service to our country.
“My grandfather used to say that once in your life you need a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman and a preacher, but every day, three times a day, you need a farmer.”
